While watching the One Child Nation documentary, I was heavily inspired by Peng Wang’s testimony of finding discarded medical waste in landfills. The yellow plastic bags entitled “medical waste” contained the remains of forcefully aborted babies. Though there isn’t a specific number of forced abortions, it can be assumed that forced abortions and sterilizations were done during the enforcement of the policy. Here in My Rising Sun I wanted to showcase a young girl rising from the ashes of despair she was left in. It’s no secret that most Chinese adoptees are girls, due to the cultural preference towards girls. In China, girls were put in landfills, treated as lesser than, and I wanted to depict the girl rising above her circumstances.
