Sumi ink and ink paintings have a rich history in China and throughout East Asia. This medium which is often done on scrolls or paper, celebrates the color black, and the lyricality of line. Technical facility in the west often looks at line very differently and there is not as much importance placed on it. Though the western tradition of oil painting is incredibly rich, ink drawings predate it, and I wanted to embrace this tradition through capturing more contemporary imagery in a traditional medium. This imagery is inspired by fashion magazines, Korean dramas, and Japanese film which have been essential to the exportation of East Asian culture.
