My sculptural work is primarily in ceramic clay, a material with deep roots in Chinese art, culture, and history. From the Yangshao pottery which date back to the third millenium BCE, to the iconic terracotta army which was made 209 BCE, and China’s rich tradition of porcelain, I wanted to use porcelain as it has a very fine quality to it. It is almost white and pristine and I chose to leave it without glaze to enhance the earthen quality of the material. To me these are not a spectacle to wonder at or be idealized, but rather tributes to sit with and process. Most of this body of work deals with the One Child Policy and the loss which took place under its enforcement.
